I hope everyone had a great summer, and a fabulous start of the school year! I think it's time to get our favorite book/ cake club going again, eh? Since we love covering our cakes in blood so much and love Jane Austen, I think it's time we did "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, Seth Grahame-Smith took Jane Austen's book and added in lots of gory zombie violence to the plot! Sounds fun!

I am not sure when the next meeting will be, but there must be some day where there isn't marching band! In the mean time, start reading!

By the way, if you are wondering why pictures of our last cake never were posted, we ended up being a bit more into talking to people on Charles's X-box than working on the cake. First we couldn't get it out of the pan, then whatever we tried to add only made it look, that was kind of a fail.

New book!

Sorry about the delay in posting this, but as many of you know, the new book is Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell.

It is a book written in verse about the Lady of Shalott, and I really encourage everyone to read it, I loved it!

So, our "Rebecca" cake wasn't quite as magnificent as the Grimm's cake, we stuck to something pretty simple. This is Rebecca's dead body with the bullet wound in her heart. I am not exactly sure how much time has passed since she died, since there is still blood, and yet her hair has already been "turned white by the sea" and there are fish in it! But, it's a cake, so I guess it doesn't have to be exactly realistic!

The creepy pink and orange and green thing is another one of Caroline's creepy creatures (yay, alliteration!) made of fondant. It is apparently Jasper the dog. He is eating Rebecca's face. This time we couldn't just cover it up and make it a hill. Haha.
We know she got shot, it was just fun to stick the knife in. Ok, that sounds like we have a really sick sense of humor, but it was a cake!

Pictures Below!

Definitely click on the pictures to make them larger, especially the overall view of the cake! My "Clever Alice" is the face on the side of the mountain with a peanut body and the hatchet over her head! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! You really have to read that story....And if you read the blue letters in the cake that say FOX, it is Caroline's marker to the fox that we buried and made a hill. Sorry, Caroline, we just were a little creeped out by that thing!

Oh, and we are rescheduling Rebecca for this weekend, so you can still read it!!!

So, the first picture did not turn out especially well, but the brown thing was the most adorable deer made out of a peanut and marzipan ever! (I am quite proud!) This was from "The Little Brother and Sister", in which the brother drinks from a stream and turns into a deer, and then all of this random stuff happens, and the sister becomes queen, and it's all very random!!! Anyway, the deer is drinking from the pond that comes out of the waterfall coming down the mountain thing that you can see in the whole picture!

The second picture shows Olivia's fantastic Cinderella coming out of a tower of her castle! The whole covering the castle with black food coloring didn't work out especially well, but it's still awesome! We went a bit overboard with covering the cake with little bushes and mushrooms (cookies and gumdrops on pretzel sticks), but the overall effect is really quite charming!

The last obviously shows the entire cake, which was amazing!!! It is difficult to see the details, and I recommend clicking on the picture to make it larger! The little procession of animals that are in twos is from "The Two Brothers", the two geese and the fox in the back are from "The Fox and the Geese" (haha!), the rose with the dead body (HAHAHAHA!) in the right-front corner is from "The Rose", and you can't see my amazing "Clever Alice" at all. :(

I hope you can get the general idea of the cake and how brilliant it was! We all loved how it turned out!!!!!

Sorry for the delay, but here are some pictures of the Grimm's cake! There were only three on Olivia's camera! I thought that we had taken more, but I guess that was on the cellphone!

Rebecca Meeting!

So, the plan is to have the first meeting for Rebecca this Saturday at Aidan's house. We are planning on a new rule, YOU MUST HAVE ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK TO COME TO THE MEETING. I mean, we aren't going to kick you out if you do come or anything, but it would make more sense this way, so that we actually get to discuss the book instead of a couple people planning the cake and everyone else... say, playing Wii! Not that there won't be time for that stuff as well.

I am so far the only person who as actually finished it, but Olivia is almost done, and a couple others PROMISED that they would read it! So, I guess we'll have a very small meeting again. We are going to be planning the next cake and watching the movie of Rebecca.

Remember, all this is tentative, as we may all perish in a fire if Caroline or I trip during Honor Society on Friday. I really will try not to catch your hair on fire, Olivia! But hey, let's not go there!

I just wanted to say that I just finished Rebecca, and I absolutely loved it! The first couple of chapters or so are kind of boring, but it gets much better! I love how you don't even know the narrator's name, it is all about Rebecca! It isn't exactly a murder mystery like you generally think of them, where you are trying to figure out the killer. And it keeps you interested even once you know what happened, which is weird... Plus, what a last paragraph!!!!!!!! I don't want to give anything away, but I really do think that everyone should read it!

Enjoy your spring break!

Grimm's cake and our next book!

Hey! I will post pictures of the Grimm's cake eventually, but they need to be emailed to me first! It was awesome though, and those of us who bothered to COME had a fabulous time making it, eating it, making up "What if.."s, making Charles chase basketballs down hills, getting locked in the basement by Caroline, etc...

Many of us found most of the fairy tales hilarious and random, although often gruesome. However, Sarah puts it..."
I tried reading some of them, and it was so boring and painful I had to stop."

We have decided to read "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier next. This is a British murder mystery, and reader reviews seem to agree that although some of it may seem slow or dull, it truly is a great read if you are not discouraged by that fact and keep reading! I have a feeling that those people who couldn't get through a Grimm's fairy tale might not love this book either, but Olivia and I certainly are looking forward to it! Next time we will choose a more modern book!

Since our next meeting will probably not be for another three weeks due to Spring Break, everyone should have plenty of time to acquire and read it.

Meeting on Saturday!

There is a meeting this Saturday (the 28th, I think). We are sticking to the 11-3 schedule, and this will be at Olivia's house again. We are making the Grimm's Fairy Tales cake! We will also decide on the next book. I am sure Olivia will want to discuss this movie thing as well. Lol.

The Board Dudes!

In case you were curious, the Board Dudes have so far failed to respond to our email!!!!!! We have to try calling them again! We should email them again as well!

Meeting! Planning the Grimm's Fairy Tale Cake!

There will be a meeting this Saturday the 14th at Olivia's house, from 11:30- around 1:30. Bring your ideas for the next cake! Make sure you ask Olivia for directions if you need them! Hahaha, I totally recommend reading "Clever Alice." It is completely random! Well, most of them are completely random!

The Coraline Cake!!!!!!

Here are the pictures I have! I didn't manage to get any before the house fell apart. Hopefully someone will be able to send me one! It is a little hard to see, but the cake came out quite well overall! We went for black, white, and red to get a sense of the creepiness that is Coraline. The cat and rats were supposed to be black, but we had some trouble getting the marzipan darker than the gray you see. The face is the "other mother." It was pretty yummy!

Next Book!

We are going to read a book of Grimm's Fairy Tales next! Members: put a post-it note or something when you read stories that you think we should put into the cake.

Next Meeting!

Our next meeting will be this Saturday (28th) at 11. I am not sure how long it will take at the moment. We will make the Coraline cake. I will make the cake itself ahead of time, so we will be decorating. Please tell me if you can not come! Thanks!

(We will also decide on the book, so please vote in the pole if you have not. You don't have to be a member to vote on what we should do!)

First Meeting!

Ok, so we just had our first meeting. As our first book is Coraline, we went to see the movie! I believe our general thoughts were this:

Book: Pretty awesome, although incredibly creepy. This was written for children?????

Movie: Incredible animation, and nowhere near as nightmare-provoking as the book. Although most of the additions were fine, such as the dolls and making the mice hop (hehe), giving Coraline a friend (Weidy or Whiny or whatever his name was) wasn't the greatest idea. A big part of the book was how Coraline was the only kid!

Next meeting, we will create our Coraline cake. We will decide on a date soon! And if I didn't manage to portray your reactions correctly, please leave your thoughts in the comments!
